What is Prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy (proliferative therapy) is a non-surgical, natural, regenerative joint injection therapy that stimulates the body’s healing process to strengthen and repair injured and painful joints and tissues. It helps to address the cause of instability or weakness in a joint and produce new collagen tissue.
How does Prolotherapy work?
The injection given in a specific spot tells the body to start repairing again, causing a mild inflammatory response that encourages growth of new ligament or tendon fibers and tightening weakened structures. Over time and with multiple injections it allows a buildup of new tissue to restore strength to the weakened area.
What is in a Prolotherapy injection?
Prolotherapy injections contain natural substances to stimulate the healing response as well as a local anesthetic to help with the pain. The formula typically used is dextrose, lidocaine and occasionally B12.
Is there any down time with an injection?
Once the injection is administered there is little to no down time. After the treatment exercise may be limited to low impact exercises eventually returning to normal activity. However, there may be initial discomfort and pain after the injection is given that can last up to a month.
